At DRDGOLD we continuously aim to improve the transparency of our ESG disclosures, taking into consideration the material issues affecting ESG within the Group.
We remain committed to sustainable development with a focus on the goal of reversing the environmental legacy of early mining, limiting and reducing our impact on natural resources and improving the quality of life and communities affected in close proximity of historical mine dumps. A very important part of achieving this is through our tailings storage facility (TSF) safety business.
Our strategic focus areas with a direct link to ESG include using technology and information to enhance operational performance and minimise the impact on the environment, create a values driven culture of employee safety, empowerment, diversity and inclusivity as well as improving the quality of life of communities surrounding our operations. DRDGOLD’s principal subsidiaries are Ergo, our flagship metallurgical plant located some 50km east of Johannesburg in Brakpan; and Far West Gold Recoveries (FWGR) near Carletonville, west of Johannesburg.
Ergo and the Knights plant in Germiston comprise arguably the world’s largest gold surface tailings retreatment facility. Together with the milling and pump station at Crown Mines and City Deep (both former plants), these operations treat approximately 1.7Mt per month.
FWGR was acquired from Sibanye-Stillwater in July 2018. The acquisition was instrumental to the company’s growth strategy, increasing our gold reserves by 90%. FWGR comprises Driefontein plant 2, with a capacity of 600,000tpm and the Driefontein 4 tailings storage facility with a capacity of 500 000tpm.
